The Africa Center of Excellence for Water Management (ACEWM) is an initiative of the World Bank Group and the Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia through the Regional Center for Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA) hosted by the University of Addis Ababa (AAU ).

About the Award: Since 2016, the ACEWM has been offering interdisciplinary MSc and PhD programs in water management, with the primary aim of educating and promoting outreach the next generation of water educators, researchers, managers and professionals. Currently, ACEWM has attracted 34 PhD and 46 MSc students from Ethiopia, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Malawi, Botswana and France.
The program is a full-time course of study and the teaching takes place through lectures, seminars and field studies. In addition, education can be delivered through video conferencing and a technology-enhanced learning approach. The language of instruction throughout the study is English.

Type: Master, PhD
PhD applicants must have a master’s degree from a college or university of recognized standing with an average grade of 3.5 or above on a 4.0 scale or equivalent in ECTS. However, applicants with an average grade between 3.0 and 3.5 will be considered based on their experience and achievement. Candidates for the Ph.D. program must provide evidence of research capacity. This could be a master’s thesis, a professional paper, peer-reviewed manuscripts, advisory reports or other evidence of research capacity. The cumulative GPA of all applicants must not be less than 2.75 for males and not less than 2.50 for females on a 4.0 scale. Applicants who obtained their diploma/degree from foreign universities (other than Ethiopia) must obtain their diploma/degree equivalent from Ethiopian Higher Education Relevance and Quality Agency (HERQA) before admission. (Academic documents authentication by the relevant office is required during admission). Applicants must have adequate knowledge of the English language and provide proof of proficiency. The age limit at the time of applying for M.Sc. applicants is 30 years of age or less and for Ph.D. 40 years or less. ACEWM receives modest funding to support research projects from all selected applicants who successfully participate in ACEWM programs. In addition to research support, ACEWM will provide full scholarships to a very limited number (3 PhD and 5 MSc) highly competent applicants from African countries other than Ethiopia. A monthly stipend of USD 600 (equivalent amount paid in ETB) for MSc. and 800 USD (equivalent amount paid in ETB) for PhD students. The stipend includes accommodation.
Duration of the Award: The PhD program has a duration of 4 years and the MSc program 2 years (academic years).
