Thomson Reuters Foundation 2022 Reporting on Locally Guided Climate Change Adaptation
Deadline: July 17, 2022
According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, 3.5 billion people are highly vulnerable to climate impacts as they experience severe water shortages every year. Rising temperatures and rainfall are leading to an increased risk of exposure to deadly heat stress, severe flooding and the spread of disease to people, crops, livestock and wildlife worldwide.
This training opportunity offers 12 multimedia journalists the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the impacts of climate change at the local level and hone their skills to draw urgent attention to them through news reporting.
It will help participants understand why local leadership is needed to address many of these impacts, and the important role the media can play in shining a light on the adaptation efforts of local actors.
The two-track program aims to strengthen working relationships between journalists and changemakers by training journalists to better report on the subject and improving changemakers’ communication skills to effectively convey their message to journalists.
Journalists and civil society organizations are trained separately, but networking and collaboration exercises are organized for the whole group.
Benefits
This training opportunity is open to multimedia journalists working in local or national media organizations in developing countries, who have a strong interest in reporting local stories related to locally-led climate change adaptation. With a journalistic angle and an interactive approach, participants will be better equipped to tackle the challenge of climate change both locally and globally.
At the end of the program you will be able to:
Deepen your understanding of the different facets and challenges of climate change impacts on vulnerable communities to produce high-impact, news, features and op-eds Identify compelling story angles on solutions from local communities responding to the impacts of climate change Improve techniques for monitoring climate change facts while using your critical thinking skills to counteract misinformation and build your audience’s trustInterview potentially vulnerable members of the public in a sensitive manner
You will become part of a global network supporting your efforts to advance locally guided climate change adaptation.
*The content of the program can be changed during the course of the training to best meet the learning needs of the participants.
