The future of thousands of Zimbabweans is at stake when the permit expires in December. To get a work permit in South Africa, Zimbabweans must prove they have a special skill or apply for an exemption from the labor department. It will take another four months for Zimbabweans in South Africa to be considered illegal immigrants under the Zimbabwe Exemption Permits (ZEP) after the South African government decided to revoke these permits.
Home Secretary Aaron Motsoaledi said they have hired private lawyers to clear the backlogs as the Zimbabwe waiver permit expires looming.

Last Novemberthe government announced the decision to end the license in December this year after its first implementation in 2009.
This means that Zimbabweans will have to identify their residence through other forms of residence permit.
To get a work permit in South Africa, Zimbabweans must prove they have a special skill or apply for an exemption from the labor department.
Many get stuck there because the department has to deal with backlogs.
When asked, Interior Minister Motsoaledi chose to keep quiet.
“What I can tell you is that we have put together a team led by the former DG of the Presidency, Dr Lubisi. We have brought him together with a team of private sector lawyers, who will be sitting every day to process these documents to ensure we do not fall behind,” the minister said.
The Helen Suzman Foundation is taking to court to challenge the abolition of the Zimbabwe Certificate of Exemption, something the Interior Ministry is determined to defend.
