Soka University Scholarship for International Students Students in Japan 2021/22

Soka University has a scholarship system for international (foreign) students enrolled in the school to minimize their financial pressure.

Students of the undergraduate program

Soka University Foundation for Education, Scholarship for International Students.

The scholarship is offered to students who meet academic performance standards.

Applicants: International students enrolled in Soka University’s Undergraduate Program, who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and good character, and who are experiencing difficulties in continuing enrollment due to financial pressures are eligible. Academic Requirements:
Total GPA is equal to or greater than 3.5 – JPY 50,000 per month x 12 months (JPY 600,000 per year)
Overall GPA is equal to or greater than 2.8 and less than 3.5 – JPY 40,000 per month x 12 months (JPY 480,000 per year)
Overall GPA is equal to or greater than 2.2 and less than 2.8 – JPY 30,000 per month x 12 months (JPY 360,000 per year)
Note: The Grade Point Average (GPA) at Soka is calculated on a 4.0 scale. Registration procedure:
Incoming Students: The procedures will be explained after enrollment in the Scholarship Orientation for International Students.
Continuing students (those who become second, third or fourth year students): The application takes place after the introductory meeting in December. Payout: After confirmation of the student’s enrollment, the payout is generally made at the end of each recipient’s bank account.

Note: This scholarship format refers to the 2020 academic year and is subject to change in the future.

Scholarship exemption for international students

Recipients are screened prior to enrollment and the exemption is applied from the first year.

Candidates: International students enrolled in Soka University’s Undergraduate Program, who demonstrate outstanding academic achievement and good character, and who face difficulties in continuing enrollment due to financial pressures are eligible. Amount of exemption and family income:
The previous year’s annual household income is less than JPY 4,000,000 – full tuition and school fees waiver
The annual household income of the previous year is equal to or greater than JPY 4,000,000 and less than JPY 8,000,000 – half waiver of tuition and fees
The annual household income of the previous year is equal to or greater than JPY 8,000,000 and less than JPY 10,000,000 – quarterly tuition and school fees waiver
The previous year’s annual household income exceeds 10,000,000 JPY – no tuition and school fees waiver
If the student has a brother or sister who is simultaneously enrolled in Soka University, the annual household income is recalculated as follows:
If the student has a sibling currently enrolled in the Undergraduate Program at Soka University and/or Soka Women’s College, the household income eligible for the exemption will be deducted from JPY 1,800,000.
If the student has a brother or sister who is currently enrolled in the Japanese Preparatory Language Program and the undergraduate program at Soka University, the family income eligible for the exemption will be deducted from JPY 1,470,000.
* In the event that the student has a brother or sister who is currently enrolled in the Graduate School at Soka University, there is no deduction. Application Method: Candidates applying for the Undergraduate Admissions for International Students can apply for the scholarship at the same time. Results for both applications will be announced together. The duration of the exemption period is one academic year. Those who want continuation must apply for it for each respective year. Continuing students (those who become second, third or fourth year students): The application is made after the orientation session to be held in December

Matters pertaining to both types of scholarships

The university accepts applications from not only international students with the student visa, but also Japanese national students who are dependent on a parent residing outside Japan and possessing citizenship, permanent residence or a corresponding law of that country or territory. The scholarships do not apply to students who have exceeded the standard enrollment period. Undergraduate Program students must obtain at least the following credits: At the end of each semester, students must have obtained at least 15 credits in the first semester, 30 credits in the second semester (first year), 45 credits the third semester, 60 credits the fourth semester (second year), 75 credits the fifth semester, 90 credits the sixth semester (third year), 105 credits the seventh semester. The academic fees exempt in the exemption scholarship refer to tuition and school fees, and not applicable to the registration fee, entrance fee, registration fee, course materials or Gakuyu-kai Clu b Association fees. The scholarships are in the form of a grant, not a loan to be repaid.

Graduate students

Soka University Makiguchi Memorial Education Fund, Scholarship for International Students

The scholarship is offered to students who meet academic performance standards.

Applicants: International students enrolled in the Graduate School of Soka University, who have outstanding academic performance and good character, and who are experiencing difficulties in continuing enrollment due to financial pressures are eligible. Academic Requirements:
Students who have obtained a certain number of credits – JPY 30,000 per month x 12 months (JPY 360,000 per year) Application procedure: The procedures will be explained after registration at the scholarship orientation for international students. Payout: Payouts are generally made at the end of each month to recipients’ bank accounts.

Scholarship exemption for international students

Candidates: International students enrolled in the Graduate School of Soka University, who have outstanding academic performance and good character, and who are experiencing difficulties in continuing to enroll due to financial pressures are eligible. Amount of exemption:
Complete Waiver of Academic Fees Application Process: Candidates applying for International Students Application for Graduate Schools can apply for the scholarship at the same time. Results for both applications will be announced together. The duration of the exemption period is 1 academic year. Those desiring continuation must apply for it for each respective year.

Matters pertaining to both types of scholarships

The university accepts applications from not only international students with the student visa, but also Japanese national students who are dependent on a parent residing outside Japan and possessing citizenship, permanent residence or a corresponding law of that country or territory. The scholarships do not apply to students who have exceeded the standard enrollment period. Graduate School students must complete at least the designated number of credits in the respective major. The academic fees waived in the waiver scholarship refer to tuition and school fees, and not to application fees, admission fees, registration fees, course materials, or fees from the Gakuyu-kai Club Association. The scholarships are in the form of a grant, not a loan to be repaid.
