Mark Zuckerberg launches community features in WhatsApp app

Mark Zuckerberg has announced that new features will be added to the popular WhatsApp platforms. According to him, the new feature allows people to communicate with close friends and contacts in different communities.

Mark Zuckerberg stated; “Today we are excited to share our vision for a new feature we are adding to WhatsApp called Communities. Since the launch of WhatsApp in 2009, we’ve focused on how we can help people make the most of a face-to-face conversation when they want to talk to a person or a group of friends or family. We also often hear from people who use WhatsApp to communicate and coordinate within a community.

Organizations such as schools, local clubs and non-profits now rely on WhatsApp to securely communicate and get things done, especially as the pandemic forced us all to find creative ways to work together when we weren’t together. Given the amount of feedback we’ve received, we think we can do more to make it easier to help people manage these busy conversations between these types of groups.

This is where communities come into play. Communities on WhatsApp allow people to bring separate groups together under one umbrella with a structure that works for them. That way, people can get updates sent to the entire community and easily organize smaller discussion groups about what’s important to them. Communities will also include powerful new tools for administrators, including announcement messages that will be sent to everyone and control over which groups can be included.

We think communities will make it easier for a school principal to bring all the parents of the school together to share updates they need to read and set up groups about specific classes, extracurricular activities, or volunteer needs.

We’re also making some improvements to the way groups work on WhatsApp, whether they’re part of a community or not. We think these will help people share in new ways and reduce overload in larger chats. These features will be rolled out in the coming weeks so people can try them out before communities are ready.

Comments – Emoji comments are coming to WhatsApp so people can quickly share their thoughts without flooding chats with new messages. Remove admin – Group admins can remove erroneous or problematic messages from anyone’s chats. File Sharing – We’re increasing file sharing to support files up to 2 gigabytes so people can easily collaborate on projects. Larger Voice Calls – We’re introducing one-tap voice calling for up to 32 people with an all-new design for those times when live talk is better than chat.

Communities are inherently private, so we will continue to protect messages with end-to-end encryption. This security technology has really never been more necessary to protect people’s privacy and security. Close-knit groups — schools, members of a religious congregation, even businesses — desperately want and need to be able to have secure, private conversations without WhatsApp checking their word. You can read more about how we handle privacy, safety and security for communities here.

While other apps create chats for hundreds of thousands of people, we choose to focus on supporting the groups that make up our daily lives. It is still early days for communities on WhatsApp and building new features to support them will be a major focus of ours in the coming year. We can’t wait to get communities into people’s hands and look forward to people’s feedback.”
