Harvard University Academy Scholars Program 2022 for International PhD Students

Each year, four to six Academy Scholars are named for two-year appointments at the Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA.

About the Award: The Academy Scholars are a select community of individuals of ingenuity, initiative, curiosity and originality, whose work in cultures or regions outside the US or Canada holds promise as the foundation for exceptional careers at major universities or international institutions.

Academy Scholars are appointed to a two-year, in-residence, postdoctoral fellowship at the Harvard Academy for International and Area Studies, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA. They receive substantial financial and research assistance to carry out sustainable research projects and/or receive additional training in their chosen fields and areas. The Senior Scholars, a distinguished group of senior Harvard University faculty, act as mentors to the Academy Scholars to help them reach their intellectual potential.

Suitability:

Applications from qualified persons are welcome regardless of nationality, gender or race. These awards are open to recipients of a PhD or equivalent (within two years from August 1, 2023, start date) and advanced doctoral candidates in the social sciences. Scholars approaching dissertation completion must be able to submit diploma transfer documentation issued by their college registry office for a start date of August 1, 2023 by June 30, 2023. Individuals who have or have completed any other Harvard postdoctoral fellowship will not be admitted eligible for registration. The selection committee considers all candidates in one candidate pool.

Award Value: Postgraduate Academy Scholars receive an annual stipend of $70,000.

How to Apply: All application materials must be submitted before the deadline of September 23, 2022. We do not accept late requests.

The completed application includes:

Curriculum Vitae (CV) or resume; including list of publications Research proposal (maximum 2000 words); including intellectual objectives and planned methodological and disciplinary work. One example of a scientific writing assignment (eg, chapter on a dissertation or article in a peer-reviewed scientific journal); only ONE sample may be submitted and it must be in English A copy of your PhD program transcript Three letters of recommendation (uploaded via the online application)

Letters of recommendation must be uploaded before the September 23, 2022 deadline.

All parts of the application, including the three letters of recommendation, are submitted online as PDF documents. Keep in mind that a full application package should not exceed 10 MB, so be sure to minimize the size of large PDF files before uploading them.

You may include footnotes, endnotes and/or bibliographies in your proposed research statement, but this is not mandatory. If you do provide references, they will not count towards the 2000-word maximum for the research statement.

As for transcripts from foreign universities, our reviewers read many applications from those from foreign universities and ask for as much transcript-like official documentation as your university’s registrar can provide for all graduation work – both for the master’s and PhD programs in which you are or are registered. Your institution will most likely receive these requests frequently and will be able to provide you with the required paperwork upon request.
