Google Equiano cable to increase retail internet prices in Nigeria by 21 . to lower

Google’s new privately owned submarine cable, Equiano, will cut Internet sales price in Nigeria by 21 percent, the company said in a statement.

Equiano’s undersea internet cable landed in Lagos, Nigeria on Thursday.

Named after Olaudah Equiano, a Nigerian-born writer and historical abolitionist, the Internet cable has a capacity of 144 terabits (18 terabytes).

The Equiano cable, which landed in Lomé, Togo, last month, starts in Portugal in Western Europe and runs more than 12,000 km along the west coast of Africa.

“Google is committed to supporting Africa’s digital transformation and we are excited to see the impact of Equiano’s landing in Nigeria. We have worked with established partners and experts in the country to ensure Equiano has the greatest potential impact in Nigeria and across Africa.” Juliet Ehimuan, director of West Africa at Google, noted in the statement.

The statement added that the high-capacity Equiano cable, which will become operational later this year, is expected to increase Internet penetration by 6 percent, increase Internet speed six times, increase Nigeria’s GDP by $10 billion. by 2025, and will boost job creation by 1.6 million and save about 2.8 million tons of CO2 emissions per year.

Ehimuan added: “Equiano will make a lasting contribution to the development of the communication infrastructure in Nigeria and today marks another important step in its development. We look forward to delivering on our commitment to be part of Africa’s digital transformation.”

Meanwhile, Nigerian Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, has said the federal government would create a favorable environment that encourages foreign and local investment in the country.

Pantami added that the federal government, through the ministry, will encourage the implementation of the current government’s existing digital economy policies.
