The scholarships provided provide full financial coverage to those eligible students. In addition, there are also additional fees to be provided to disabled and special students. The Erasmus+ grant amount is divided into three groups and paid per country. Under this option, there is a wider range of subjects available to choose from (as per the applicant’s choice).

Where to Study: The students can conduct their research or study in any of the Erasmus+ program countries that comprise the Member States of the European Union, in addition to the Republic of Macedonia, Liechtenstein, Iceland, Serbia, Norway and Turkey respectively. Keep in mind that the Erasmus+ period cannot take place in the Netherlands or in the student’s own country of residence.

What is an Erasmus programme?

The Erasmus scheme has been in existence since the 1980s. Under this scholarship scheme, students benefit from studying at partner universities in EU Member States for a certain period of time. If you are enrolled in the Erasmus Mundus program, and there are also some Erasmus programs in which the students study in a mobility mode.

Eligibility Requirements for the Scholarship

At Leiden University, the applicant’s study or research must be fully recognized as part of their bachelor’s, master’s or PhD programme. The receiving university or institution must have an Erasmus+ inter-institutional agreement with Leiden University. By the time the scholarship application is posted, the applicant must have a postal address in the Netherlands. The applicants could submit their application for an Erasmus+ grant up to a maximum of 12 months per study cycle (total) for Bachelor, Master or PhD. The duration of the Erasmus+ period must be between 3 months and 12 months. A duration of less than 90 days can only be recognized on the condition that the applicant’s host university/institution uses a system of trimesters or shorter semesters.

Scholarship Obligations

During your stay abroad, you must pay statutory tuition fees to Leiden University. Before or at the end of the Erasmus+ period, the applicant must take an online language test. After the Erasmus+ period, an online participant report must be completed. The required documents must be submitted on time before, during and after the Erasmus+ period. If you do not, you will have to repay the full Erasmus+ grant.

Financial benefits / Scholarship amount

With regard to the Leiden University Scholarship 2022 (Erasmus+ scholarship), the following will be awarded.

The Erasmus+ grant amount is calculated based on the exact number of days spent abroad and the applicant’s destination country. Erasmus+ countries are also divided into 3 groups in terms of the amount awarded:

Group 1 – € 360 per month
Finland, Denmark, Ireland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Sweden, Norway, United Kingdom and Sweden.

Group 2 – €300 per month
Belgium, Austria, France, Cyprus, Greece, Germany, Malta, Italy, Spain and Portugal.

Group 3 – € 240 per month
Croatia, Bulgaria, Estonia, Czech Republic, Latvia, Hungary, Lithuania, Romania, Poland, Slovakia, Serbia, Slovenia, Turkey and the Republic of Macedonia.

Additional financial support for people with special needs or disabilities

If one of the students interested in this scholarship has a special need or disability, and he or she is eligible for the Erasmus+ scholarship, Leiden University can apply for additional financial support from the Erasmus+ program on behalf of the applicant.
