Today there are an estimated 1.8 million people between the ages of 10 and 24, the largest generation of young people in the history of mankind. Their numbers are expected to grow – approximately 1.9 billion young people are expected to live to be 15 between 2015 and 2030 alone.

Connected like never before, young people are increasingly contributing to innovative solutions, promoting social progress and inspiring political initiatives. They are agents of change and mobilize to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to improve people’s lives and the health of the planet.

UNITAR is therefore pleased to offer an online training program in Geneva specifically designed for the youth worldwide. It offers participants the opportunity to gain first-hand experience of the United Nations and will provide them with the necessary knowledge and skills to realize their full potential as a global leader

Content and structure

The United Nations Online Training Program for Young Leaders consists of a 4-week e-learning course implemented on UNITAR’s e-learning platform. The course consists of 4 different modules, which can be studied at your own pace and require 4-6 hours of study per week.

Module 1: The United Nations Module 2: Conference Diplomacy Module 3: Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)Module 4: Cosmopolitan Communications

The course includes weekly reading materials, multimedia files and discussion boards that exchange views with fellow participants and UNITAR instructors. In addition, the Young Leaders Online Training Program is complemented by various 1.5-hour live webinars. These are provided by UN experts via the platform zoom and cover the following topics:

Webinar A – The United Nations System Webinar B – The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Webinar C – United Nations Model Training (MUN) Webinar D – Career Development at the UN

In addition to the above live webinars, there is one e-workshop of 3.5 hours each week. These will focus on leadership and getting to know the multilateral environment of Geneva through virtual tours of the UN Palais des Nations and the diplomatic district of Geneva.

Methodology

The training program for young leaders will be conducted from UNITAR’s e-Learning platform, where announcements and relevant links to activities will be posted. In addition to the components mentioned above, the platform will feature online reading materials, interactive quizzes and pre-recorded videos, which participants can study at any time that is best for them.

The expert webinars, e-workshops, virtual tours and other live components will largely be delivered via the online software Zoom. The program is designed to be highly interactive and participatory. Online activities include a high level of exposure to policymakers and diplomatic institutions, providing participants with a deep knowledge and understanding of the United Nations.

In addition, the live components will all be offered in the afternoon Geneva time, allowing participants in all time zones to participate at reasonable times. The live components will also be recorded and made available on the platform afterwards. All activities take place in the English language.

Targeted audience

The Young Leaders Training Program is open to all actors dealing with international affairs who wish to take a leading role in their respective environment and build knowledge and skills related to the UN and International Geneva.

Participants may include college students, high school students, and other aspiring young leaders from a similar background. Junior professionals from the public and private sectors and senior civil servants with a young heart are also welcome to apply.

To ensure the highest quality standards, registration will be closed after 30 participants. Slots are allocated on a first come, first served basis. At the end of the program, all participants will receive an official UNITAR Certificate of Completion.
