Amazon to acquire US healthcare provider for $3.9 billion

California’s One Medical will now be an integral part of Amazon’s new mission to transform healthcare.

Amazon has entered into a definitive merger agreement with One Medical, with US health technology being acquired by the e-commerce giant.

One Medical, headquartered in San Francisco, is a primary care organization that combines personal, digital and virtual care services.

Amazon is buying One Medical in a cash transaction for $18 a share, or about $3.9 billion. Amazon will also take over One Medical’s net debt under the terms of the deal, which is yet to be approved.

Amir Dan Rubin will stay on as CEO of One Medical.

“The ability to transform healthcare and improve outcomes by combining One Medical’s people-centric and technology-driven model and exceptional team with customer obsession, history of invention and willingness to invest for the long term , is so exciting,” said Rubin.

“There is a huge opportunity to make the healthcare experience more accessible, affordable and even more enjoyable for patients, providers and payers.”

Neil Lindsay, SVP of Amazon Health Services, said Amazon is putting healthcare high on its list of sectors that “need to be reinvented”.

“Make an appointment, wait weeks or even months to be seen, take time off from work, drive to a clinic, find a parking space, wait in the waiting room and then the exam room for what can often be a rushed few minutes with a doctor , and then take another trip to a pharmacy — we see a lot of opportunities to both improve the quality of the experience and give people back valuable time in their days,” he said.

“We love inventing things that should be easy, and we want to be one of the companies that will help dramatically improve the healthcare experience for years to come.”

Lindsay concluded that One Medical will now be at the center of that “long-term mission” at Amazon.
