The German research chair, Dr. Jan Hązła at AIMS Rwanda, in collaboration with Prof. Nicola Kistler at Goethe University in Frankfurt, Germany, is offering PhD and Postdoc Scholarships at AIMS Rwanda Research Center in Kigali. These scholarships are made available and funded by the DEED and sponsored by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research in Germanyto promote international academic exchanges and educational cooperation with developing countries through a variety of funding and scholarship programs.
AIMS Rwanda is looking for outstanding candidates with a strong interest and background in discrete mathematics and discrete probability research with applied motivations. The research topics will be mathematical, motivated by different applications such as error correction in data transmission, voting procedures, network processes and understanding machine learning algorithms.

Suitability for PhD candidate
A master’s degree in mathematical sciences (two-year degree is highly preferred). Strong interest in any of the above areas. Some experience in the above areas is a plus. Good coding skills (eg Python, Matlab/Mathematica and similar) are a plus. Academic excellence. Good communication skills in English. Preferably a national of an African country.
Eligibility for Postgraduate Applicants
A PhD in Mathematical Sciences (PhD no more than 6 years before the start of the fellowship). Strong interest and background in any of the above areas. Previous research in the above areas is a strong plus. Good coding skills (e.g., Python, Matlab/Mathematica and similar) is a plus. Academic excellence and track record in conducting research. Good communication skills in English. Preferably a national of an African country.
Female candidates and candidates from disadvantaged regions or groups are particularly encouraged to apply.

What is the advantage of AIMS Rwanda PhD & Postdoc Scholarships?
PhD
The Ph.D. positions are tenable for 3 years, subject to satisfactory progress, and are renewable for a further year. Monthly grants are EUR 1,325 (during stay in Rwanda) and EUR 1,200 (during research stays in Germany). Tuition is covered. Travel expenses (if applicable) are covered. Health insurance is covered. Additional benefits will be made available for start and end mobility in Rwanda and for research residency at Goethe University during the PhD project. The positions are expected to start as soon as possible, with a target for the end of 2022.
PostDoc
The postdoc scholarships are valid for one year, subject to satisfactory progress, and can be extended for a further year. The monthly grants amount to 1,850 EUR (during a stay in Rwanda) and 2,000 EUR (during research stays in Germany). Travel expenses (if applicable) are covered. Health insurance is covered. Additional benefits will be made available for start and end mobility in Rwanda and for research stays at Goethe University during the fellowship. The position is expected to start as soon as possible, with a target for the end of 2022.
